Big Sable River
About the River
Flowing approximately 52 miles through Lake and Mason Counties before emptying into Lake Michigan near Ludington, the Big Sable River is one of western Michigan’s premier coldwater rivers. Fed by abundant groundwater and flowing through extensive forests, the watershed provides outstanding habitat for trout and supports a diverse array of aquatic wildlife. Known for its exceptional water quality and outstanding recreational opportunities, the Big Sable is a treasured resource for anglers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Since 2007, Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) has completed 14 restoration projects throughout the watershed, including streambank stabilization, erosion control, in-stream habitat enhancement with large woody debris, and the replacement of the LaSalle Road stream crossing. Building on nearly two decades of restoration work, CRA’s upcoming Big Sable Streambank Inventory will identify future restoration priorities to improve aquatic habitat, protect water quality, and ensure the Big Sable remains one of Michigan’s premier trout rivers for generations to come.
