In 2024, CRA conducted fish species surveys using backpack electrofishing at various sites within its service area in northwest Lower Michigan. These surveys assess fish diversity and size structure before planned road/stream crossing replacements, addressing issues of watershed fragmentation and aquatic habitat disruption caused by deteriorating infrastructure. Given the ecological impact of outdated crossings—limiting fish movement, altering stream flow, and contributing to habitat degradation—CRA has expanded its capacity to perform fishery surveys, historically conducted by partners such as the MDNR, tribal nations, and conservation organizations. This initiative enhances data collection for informed decision-making while supporting collaborative resource management efforts with state and tribal entities.

This effort would not have been possible without the support of the Elliott Donnelley Chapter of Trout Unlimited (Chicago, IL), the Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited (Traverse City, MI), Fly Fishers International, and Fly Fishers International – Great Lakes Council, whose funding covered both the purchase of equipment and the labor required to complete this work.
