Wild Link to Assist With Ransom Lake Natural Area Management

January 7, 2008

The Conservation Resource Alliance’s Wild Link program is cooperating with Almira Township to write a detailed management plan for the 218 acre Ransom Lake Natural Area. Ransom Lake is located just east of the Village of Lake Ann, right in the middle of a Wild Link focus wildlife corridor. This property has a diverse mix of habitats including an 18 acre undeveloped lake, Ransom Creek (which eventually flows into the Platte River), northern hardwoods, lowland conifer swamps, and many springs. The property was acquired in 2002 through a joint effort by the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, Almira Township, and the Almira Citizens for Preservation. A Michigan DNR Trust Fund grant provided much of the money needed for acquisition, the rest was raised by the tremendous efforts of the above groups and local citizens.

Ransom Lake Natural Area is a protected natural area. But, even a protected area needs proper management. CRA will cooperate with Almira Township and their Recreational Resources Committee to write a management plan that will outline specific on-the-ground activities and monitoring projects to conserve the natural resources of the area. CRA looks forward to coordinating volunteer projects with the township and will serve as a resource as new threats to the area (such as invasive species) are identified. The plan writing process will begin with field work in the early winter and spring of 2008 with a first draft ready by April of 2008. On-the-ground habitat conservation projects should begin next May.

CRA is excited to be working together with Almira Township to help preserve and enhance the wildlife habitat of Ransom Lake AND Northwest Michigan. If you have any questions about the plan please contact Eric Ellis, Wild Link Biologist and Program manager, at the CRA office (231)946-6817.
