Wild Link Landowners

July 9, 2007

This past spring Wild Link staff helped participating landowners plant almost 11,000 native tree and shrub seedlings. The seedlings were purchased from local conservation districts and included a variety of native species such as Red Pine, Red Oak, White Spruce, White Oak, Elderberry, Nannyberry, Hawthorn, Dogwood, and Serviceberry. A small section of native prairie was also seeded in with a variety of species adapted to the sandy soils of one landowner’s property.

The primary goals of these plantings were to enhance habitat for game and songbird populations, provide sheltered travel corridors for wildlife, and to introduce native species to compete with invasives. Landowners and Wild Link staff worked together closely during the planning stages to address the individual goals outlined in their Wild Link Management Plans.

These plantings were coordinated by Wild Link staff and funded by a US Fish and Wildlife Service Coastal Program Grant, personal contributions from the landowner’s themselves, and by CRA. As Wild Link gains more landowners the number of successful on-the-ground projects such as these tree plantings should increase exponentially.
