Trees to be Returned to Manistee River to Benefit Fisheries

September 17, 2002

In a cooperative effort between the Conservation Resource Alliance, the U.S. Forest Service, Consumer's Energy, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, large woody debris will be added to the Manistee River below Hodenpyl Dam to provide cover, shade, and food for fish and aquatic insects. This fall marks the third year of the project, with approximately 330 trees placed in the previous two years.

Approximately 170 trees with attached roots will be placed along the banks in the nine-mile stretch between the Hodenpyl Dam and Red Bridge in strategic locations to provide maximum benefit for fish and to buffer eroding stream banks where possible. The trees will be placed using a heavy lift helicopter over a two-day period. Work is scheduled to take place beginning Tuesday, September 24, and should continue for two or three days, depending upon weather conditions. A river closure order will be enforced for the section of stream between Hodenpyl and Red Bridge during the operation.

The presence of large woody debris in the Manistee has been reduced over time by the operation of hydroelectric dams and as a result of 18th century logging. Fallen trees and log jams, which provided important cover for fish, were cleared from the river to facilitate floating cut logs downstream.

Funding for the project is being provided by a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Habitat Improvement Fund.
