Timber! - Winter Habitat Improvement

February 11, 2009

Winter is the time for tree cutting. This winter the Wild Link program has been working with four landowners to help them improve their wildlife habitat and meet the goals laid out in their management plans. Wild Link is assisting two landowners clear small tracts of aging aspen to regenerate this important cover type. These stands are too small to be commercially viable and are being clear cut by hand to stimulate the thick aspen regrowth required by many wildlife species including ruffed grouse, American woodcock, and many species of neo-tropical songbirds (like the Golden-winged warbler). On the other two properties Wild Link biologist Eric Ellis has been working with landowners to clear around their “crop” oak trees to improve the health of these acorn producing trees and create brush piles used by small mammals, amphibians and other wildlife throughout their life cycle.
