Spring Update on the Carp & Maple Rivers

May 23, 2016
Last year, we reported the West Branch of the Maple River in Emmet County, Michigan was officially “free.” Water from the headwaters now flows unrestricted all the way to the confluence with the East Branch. To make this happen, CRA and partners replaced four road/stream crossings with appropriately sized structures including three timber bridges.

Projects like these keep the arteries to the Great Lakes flowing freely. Healthy headwaters are part of our mission – one that we share with many dedicated partners like the Sustain Our Great Lakes program. Since the program’s inception in 2006, nearly $55 million in federal and corporate partner funding has supported projects that sustain, restore and protect our waters and wildlife including the Maple River.

CRA’s biologist Chris Pierce noted, “The support from the Sustain Our Great Lakes Program puts us within reach of our ultimate goal on the Maple River:  to ‘free span’ the entire river. This means the entire river will be able to flow from one end to the other unrestricted.”

Considering there is a manmade dam or road/stream crossing nearly every 1.25 river miles on every waterway flowing into the Great Lakes, CRA sees this free spanning feat on the Maple River as a big deal and one we hope to repeat across Northwest Lower Michigan.

We have our sights set next on the Maple River mainstem where Brutus Road crosses the river (pictured bottom). We are breaking ground this year to replace these three culverts with a timber bridge. Additional in-stream habitat work is also planned around Ely Bridge Rd and Robinson Rd. And last but certainly not least, discussions continue to evolve around the fate of Lake Kathleen Dam and connected Woodland Rd crossing.
