River Care Steering Committees Established

June 16, 2003

NEWS RELEASE - For Immediate Release Contact:Jim Haveman, Project Coordinator Amy Beyer, Director Conservation Resource Alliance 10850 Traverse Hwy., Suite 1111 Traverse City, MI 49684 (231) 946-6817 RIVER CARE STEERING COMMITTEES ESTABLISHED TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN, June 16, 2003- In late May the Board of Directors for the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) publicly announced the charter members of its newly formed River Care Steering Committee. In 1998, the River Care Program was designed to engage corporate and private funding partners to help provide proactive monitoring, maintenance and management of northern Michigan rivers and waterways. CRA views River Care as a program that can protect a spectacular part of what people love about this region. River Care is composed of a Permanent Fund, designed as an endowment for future needs, and a Working Fund established for current priorities. These funds give CRA the flexibility to compliment other funding available to help our northern Michigan watersheds. Although CRA has not reached the $5 million dollar goal for the permanent fund, today CRA has reached $210,000 in our working fund and almost $200,000 in the permanent fund. That funding was not available 5 years ago to help our region's rivers. CRA is excited about River Care and more importantly appreciates the financial support from many of our partners and members. The River Care Steering Committee was established to make recommendations about regional priorities for CRA's River Care Program so that it can maximize the positive impact that the program will have on the region's watersheds. Committee members serve a 2-year term and have knowledge of and concern for, all of northern Michigan's rivers and ecology issues. The following 6 people have agreed to serve as charter members of this committee: · Jerry Heiman - A retired dentist and an active participant in CRA's Betsie River Restoration Project. He is also an avid outdoorsman and has worked with the Platte River Project. · Jeff Graft - Traverse City business man who has completed two national, fund raising "Riding for Rivers" events for CRA. · Bob Stuber - Is serving as an advisor/liaison for the Huron-Manistee National Forest. · Tom Rozich - Is also serving as a liaison with MDNR- Fisheries Division. · Keith Charters - Is well known for his leadership in the Natural Resources Commission and the Michigan Land Trust Fund. · Pat Kelly - Is a Traverse City dentist who is Vice-Chair for CRA's Board and is active in Trout Unlimited. He will function as the CRA Board Liaison with this committee. CRA appreciates these people serving on the River Care Steering Committee and helping CRA take care of this region's rivers and watersheds for our children and grandchildren. The Conservation Resource Alliance is a private non-profit organization headquartered in Traverse City, Michigan that has been coordinating large-scale, practical, natural resource protection projects throughout the region since 1968. For more information about CRA memberships or the organization contact Matt Thomas, CRA Development Coordinator at (231) 946-6817, e-mail at rivercare@chartermi.net or visit the website at www.rivercare.org.
