Northern Michigan Partnership to Restore Stream Connectivity and Habitat Breaks Barriers

October 24, 2013

A coalition of conservation partners in northern Michigan literally broke barriers in several key watersheds through a joint project funded through the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act. Through dam removal, road/stream crossing improvement and habitat restoration, partners reconnected streams and improved habitat in many of the highest quality streams feeding the Great Lakes.

Over the last three years, staff at CRA, Huron Pines and The Nature Conservancy worked to restore and enhance water and wildlife through a cooperative funding opportunity. We know partnerships are the key to success and seized the chance through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to combine proposals for a large-scale plan for conservation projects. Work spanned from Ludington to Lake Superior. Each project was selected because it represented a well-established priority of the State, tribes and local partners. A great strength of the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration program is it is strictly guided by priorities at the local level, not from federal agencies

We often hear about projects being behind schedule or over budget this series of projects is certainly not one of them. The project also helped permanently protect 2,000 acres of ecologically rich land and demonstrated a huge fundraising success. The original grant of $767,736 leveraged $4.1 million in other federal and non-federal funding. In all, we opened 243 river miles for fish passage, improved 67 stream miles and 1,725 acres of wildlife habitat, and reduced 1,698 tons per year of sediment from entering our waterways.
