My CRA Summer

August 25, 2014

By Matt Oxley, Field Technician

A very harsh winter has led to a mild summer. While beach enthusiasts and tourists may not care for the cooler temperatures, the weather does not go unappreciated by the interns performing this summer’s batch of field work. Aside from a few weeks of high mosquito populations, the weather has been perfect for working outside.

As an intern, I have conducted hundreds of road stream crossing inventories and floated rivers for erosion and woody debris inventories, all while getting to the know the less traveled areas of Northern Michigan.

I am amazed at the beauty I have seen on a daily basis. From county roads to forest service roads and from unnamed creeks to the great Manistee River, I have seen nearly all that the area has to offer. I have learned to respect every road because each one offers its own unique splendor.

Among us were a biologist, GIS major, freshwater studies major and an engineer. While all of these fields are distinct, one common theme resides; we all have a passion and love for the natural world. It was this commonality that united us and inspired us to join the cause of improving and maintaining our region’s watersheds.

CRA would like to extend our gratitude to interns Jason Edwards, Brandon Glowacki, Matt Oxley and Charlie Wilson. Big thanks to Huron Pines for coordinating the AmeriCorps program that brought AmeriCorps member Mary Applegate to CRA.
