Momentum on the Pere Marquette

April 5, 2017
CRA is advancing its holistic approach to improving coldwater aquatic habitats in the Pere Marquette River Watershed with a series of four projects on Sanborn Creek. Supported by a generous $850,000 grant through the Sustain Our Great Lakes program, CRA and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are generating an immediate economic stimulus for this region through projects that will generate long-term ecological benefits.

This set of projects includes four road/stream crossing culvert replacements on Sanborn Creek. When completed, 14.6 miles of coldwater stream will be connected and at least 12 tons of sediment annually will be prevented from reaching the creek and subsequently overwhelming the Pere Marquette River. Sanborn Creek is a key tributary to the Pere Marquette River, boasting coldwater temperatures and providing habitat for a steady population of brook trout, along with brown trout, rainbow trout and sculpin. Environmental steward and community partner, ITC Holdings Corp, is also supporting the project with a $2,000 grant.

In addition, CRA is coordinating with the Pere Marquette River Restoration Committee to fix a degrading railroad embankment adjacent to the Pere Marquette River. With support from the Pere Marquette Watershed Council and $15,000 from Freshwater Future’s Healing Our Waters Program, engineering designs are underway to stabilize the embankment.
