Milestone Met in the Pere Marquette Headwaters

February 28, 2007

This winter marks the conclusion of a multi-year effort to address serious erosion sites on the Baldwin River, an important tributary in the Pere Marquette headwaters. The Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) worked with partners like the Pere Marquette Watershed Council, MDNR, MDEQ, US Forest Service, local businesses, and landowners to stabilize 18 streambanks on the Baldwin River over the last 4 years. This involved 2,000 lineal feet of steep, sandy streambank that was caving into the river and contributing excessive sand to the stream. Too much sand is a problem for coldwater trout streams like the Baldwin and the Pere Marquette because it makes streams wide and shallow, fills deep holes and covers gravel beds important to fish and aquatic insects. All in all, $140,000 was spent and funding was provided by the Great Lakes Commission, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Whirlpool, Orvis, area Trout Unlimited Chapters -William B. Mershon, Kalamazoo Valley, Lansing Area, CRA’s River Care Program, the Michigan Flyfishing Club, Pere Marquette Watershed Council, landowners, local businesses and family foundations. This erosion control work is complemented by a new sand trap on the Baldwin River that was emptied twice during 2006 for a total of 600 cu. yds. of sand removed. That is equivalent to 60 dump truck loads of sediment hauled out of the river. What’s next on the to do list for the Baldwin River? “Road stream crossings are still a significant source of sand in the Pere Marquette Watershed. Road Commissions are often interested in replacing and improving outdated culverts and bridges but funding is the limiting factor, especially when we want to upgrade as well as replace the old structure. CRA is always looking for grant funds for these problem sites,” comments Kimberly Balke, CRA Field Biologist.
