Meanders on the Maple

February 5, 2014

The Maple River in Emmet County is for those who seek a quiet escape. Paddlers revel in the meanders and undeveloped shoreline while many anglers seek the Michigan “triple crown” of catching a brown, brook and rainbow trout in the same stream. The secret to finding these fish may lie right underneath a Conservation Resource Alliance project.

Phase I of instream habitat work wrapped up this field season. CRA Biologist Chris Pierce placed over 2,000 linear feet of natural wood structures this year and will be back at it next year.

We are also working with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on upcoming projects, ensuring we are doing our best to reduce the spread of invasive species like the sea lamprey and protect threatened and endangered species like the Michigan monkey-flower and Hungerford’s crawling water beetle.

We recently completed a draft feasibility report for the Lake Kathleen Dam and associated road/stream crossings (Woodland Rd. and Pipeline Crossing). We also finished engineering designs to improve road/ stream crossings at three additional sites – all
designed for channel-spanning timber bridges (Ely Bridge Rd, Robinson Rd, and Brutus Rd). Next up is engineering for the Reid Rd. crossing.

Special thanks to our current members, the Pat and Gill Clements Foundation, the Michigan Fly Fishing Club, the Trout & Salmon Foundation, and the Kalamazoo Valley and Challenge Chapters of Trout Unlimited for their support on the Maple River
