Keeping Momentum Moving Forward on the Maple

October 1, 2007

The Robinson Road Crossing (E-7) over the West Branch Maple River is scheduled for construction to begin early October 2007. Keeping project momentum moving forward, CRA and partners are excited about the new crossing to be completed benefiting the entire watershed. The current crossing consists of 5 rusting culverts that are failing, blocking fish passage, causing flooding, and artificially warming water. This crossing is the uppermost crossing on the West Branch Maple River and plans are underway for replacement of the next downstream crossing (Pleasantview Rd.- E-8) in 2008. CRA looks forward to this opportunity that creates a unique situation of replacing the two uppermost crossings over the West Branch Maple River, Emmet County. Benefits to the projects include reinstated fish passage, allowing access to approximately 12 miles of headwaters of the Maple River and reduction of negative impacts to aquatic habitat from erosion and warming of waters at the crossing. Project partners include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Frey Foundation, Baiardi Family Foundation, Local Revenue Sharing Board, Emmet County Road Commission, USDA-NRCS, Northwest Design Group, Bay Harbor Foundation, and others have generously provided funding and support for these projects.
