How is a river reborn?

June 23, 2017
How is a river reborn? Well, one scoop of dirt at a time. Today, all that scooping added up. Just after dawn, the Boardman River flowed through a section of its historic channel for the first time since 1896.

The channel realignment work will add this meander back to into the system and eliminate the severe streambank erosion next to the Lone Pine trail.

Big thanks to the Michigan DNR, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians, Grand Traverse Conservation District, AECOM, Michels and volunteers from the Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited for spending the morning relocating fish that remained in the former channel.

Top: The new river channel is visible in the upper left corner. As the excavator fills in the former channel, crews look for any remaining fish and wildlife to relocate them downstream.

Middle: Partners from the Michigan DNR, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians, Grand Traverse Conservation District, AECOM, Michels, CRA and volunteers from the Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited participate in fish relocation efforts.

Bottom: The Boardman River is returned to its historic channel. This section of river is located near the Lone Pine trailhead.
