Grant Received to Improve Habitat in the Carp River

September 22, 2003

NEWS RELEASE - For Immediate Release Date: September 3, 2003 Contact: Laura Kuehn Conservation Resource Alliance 10850 Traverse Highway, Suite 1111 Traverse City, MI 49684 (231) 946-6817 cralaura@chartermi.net Grant Received to Improve Habitat in the Carp River TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN - The Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA), was awarded a $50,000 grant from the USDA-Forest Service Wood in Transportation Program (WIT) for the purpose improving the Carp River and Oliver Road crossing in Emmet County. The project will entail replacing the current undersized twin culverts with a timber bridge, paving the approaches and constructing diversion outlets. Significant erosion and flow impacts at this crossing are currently threatening the habitat of the Carp River by covering gravel needed by trout and salmon to successfully reproduce, and making migration difficult. The proposed timber structure in combination with paving and diversion outlets will better accommodate the flow of the river and alleviate continued erosion and sediment input from road run-off. Matching funds for the project are committed from the Emmet County Road Commission and from CRA's River Care Program as part of a grant from the Frey Foundation of Grand Rapids. Additional support for important planning activities was provided by the local Paradise Lake Association, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, and Northwest Design Group. The total cost of the project is approximately $160,000. CRA is currently seeking funding for an additional $40,000 needed to make this project happen. The project is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2004. Established in 1968, the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining the natural beauty of the land and waterways in Northwest Michigan. CRA has had an especially active role in watershed restoration in the last 15 years, working throughout a 13 county region with local partners in streambank stabilization, road/stream crossing repair, fish and wildlife habitat, and erosion inventory.
