Grand Traverse Band Support Improves Fish Habitat

August 8, 2001

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians recently joined the pro-active River Care initiative administered by the Conservation Resource Alliance. River Care is designed to maintain the ecological and economic value of over 20 high-quality coldwater streams in northern Michigan. A grant of $30,000 from the Band's video gaming revenue allocation will help support erosion control, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement, recreation access improvement, and road crossing projects. The work will improve a number of well-known recreational waterways, such as Lake Leelanau and the Betsie, Boardman, Bear, and Manistee Rivers. Projects will be underway throughout the summer and fall months. Conservation Resource Alliance Chairman, Dan Hubbell, says "As far back as the logging era, human activity has been degrading Michigan's natural resources. Traditional government services and funding are just not sufficient to keep ahead of the pressures. More than two thousand problem sites have been identified, and some are very expensive to repair. We are very grateful to the Grand Traverse Band for helping us change the future for Michigan's rivers, fish, wildlife, and people." The Conservation Resource Alliance is a private non-profit organization headquartered in Traverse City, Michigan that has been coordinating large-scale, practical, natural resource protection projects throughout northern Michigan since 1968.
