Grand Finale on the Betsie – All major erosion sites stabilized!

January 3, 2008

The major streambank stabilization effort initiated in 1991 wrapped up in late 2005 with the stabilization of 72 streambanks on the Betsie River. CRA and contractors used field stone placement, tree and shrub plantings, and heavy brushing and mulching to restore 9,015 lineal feet of steep, sandy bank on the Betsie River. Underwater fish habitat structures and woody debris were installed where possible to create instream hiding and resting cover for fish, aquatic insects and wildlife. This restoration work is estimated to prevent up to a 1,000 tons of sediment from entering the Betsie River on an annual basis! That is 100 dump trucks worth of sand that would otherwise be washing into the stream.
