Good News on the Maple River

February 7, 2017
Brutus Road/Maple River: before (above right) the crossing consisted of three undersized culverts that blocked the natural flow of water, nutrients and sediment while acting as a velocity barrier to aquatic species. One of the culverts was installed as an emergency overflow due to excessive flooding at this crossing. After construction (below right), the timber bridge allows safer movement of people, water and wildlife.
We are feeling the love in Emmet County – CRA and partners are gearing up for a very busy couple of years on the Maple River. Our team is excited to share the Holton family recently purchased the property where Lake Kathleen Dam sits.

We are very much looking forward to working toward our shared conservation goals including the removal of the dam in 2018 and replacing two of the most severe crossings in the watershed. The Holtons bring a broad array of conservation experience and passion for our wildlife and waters. Rick Holton, Sr. served on the board of directors for American Rivers and is eager to restore this coldwater gem.

The goal of the Free Span the Maple Initiative is 100% watershed connectivity – a rare and challenging opportunity. Last year, we took a big step forward in achieving that goal with a timber bridge on Brutus Road. Check out a great video about this work, "Let the River Flow," published by our friends at NatureChange.org.
