Flowing Well Finale

December 30, 2013

The final touches are being put on the former Flowing Well Trout Farm property in Kalkaska County. Our staff has been restoring the 1,720 acre property since 2008 and the finish line is now in sight.

Several rundown buildings were demolished and five acres of native trees and shrubs were planted this fall. In all, we removed 12 dams and applied a variety of conservation practices including invasive species removal, creation of reptile and amphibian habitat, and native plant restoration. We reconnected 31 miles of stream through this project.

We’d like to send a big thank you to all of our Flowing Well project supporters including the Elliott Donnelley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, FishAmerica Foundation, Great Lake Restoration Initiative, Michigan DNR – Fisheries Division Habitat Improvement Account, Paul H. Young Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Sustain Our Great Lakes Grant administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Trout & Salmon Foundation, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service – Great Lakes Fish & Wildlife Restoration Act and the USDA – Conservation Innovation Grant.

Dilapidated dams (below left) littered the property prior to restoration. The Upper Manistee flowing freely (below right).
