One of northern Michigan’s priority natural areas and wildlife corridors will receive a helping hand on Friday May 15, 2009 when over 40 AP Biology students from Troy Athens High School join Almira Township volunteers to restore habitat at the Ransom Lake Natural Area. Coordinated by the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA), this is the sixth year that the Troy group has pitched in to benefit northwest Michigan natural resources.
CRA’s Wild Link Program has expanded in the Grand Traverse region with funding from Traverse City Rotary Charities. This innovative program works with private landowners to improve wildlife habitat in key greenways to preserve connections between protected lands that many species need to thrive. The students and volunteers from Almira Township will work with CRA biologists to plant trees and shrubs, stabilize streambanks, and conduct in-stream surveys. This is part of an overall effort to make a positive impact in the Cedar Run Creek Wildlife corridor that is a cooperative effort between CRA, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, and other local partners.
The work bee will run from 9 am until noon with all volunteers meeting at the Ransom Lake Natural Area southwest parking lot. Please call Eric Ellis at (231)946-6817 for directions and further details.
Established in 1968, CRA is a private, non-profit organization that coordinates sensible stewardship of the land throughout northwest Michigan. The Conservation Resource Alliance has coordinated river restoration projects for over 41 years throughout northwest Michigan. For more information about projects or how you can get involved, visit CRA’s web site at www.rivercare.org.
