CRA Receives Planet Award

April 26, 2019
Here at Conservation Resource Alliance, we like to believe that we honor Mother Earth every day. However, this year’s Earth Day celebration was particularly special for us - CRA is one three organizations to receive the Consumers Energy Foundation’s Planet Award, which supports projects that significantly impact Michigan’s natural resources. The Planet Awards are the first of three $500,000 grant allocations in 2019, totaling $1.5 million. Other awardees include the Michigan Nature Association and the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, which focus on protecting habitat and wildlife and preserving freshwater resources.

CRA will receive $150,000 for our Wild Roots initiative, which aims to plant 100,000 native trees and shrubs over the next five years. This effort will reforest watersheds across 15 counties in northern Michigan, reduce runoff by nearly 8 million gallons, and provide seed stocks that will support and sustain future generations of native trees and shrubs.

“CRA appreciates corporate partners like Consumers Energy, who understand the importance of being proactive, not waiting until we lose precious forests, rivers and wildlife,” explains Paul Kogelschatz, Program Manager for Wild Roots. “At CRA we’re always looking for a way to head off more expensive restoration.  We might not know what threat will be around the next corner, but we understand the value of reforesting large areas before they are gone, and the best time to start is now!”

To kick-off Wild Roots’ inaugural year, CRA teamed up with the Leelanau Conservancy, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the Greenspire School to plant 675 native trees and shrubs at the DeYoung Nature Center with 120 students. Wild Roots’ landowner participants are receiving their trees this week, and we anticipate planting a total of 10,000 trees in the program’s first year.
