Betsie River Restoration Project Totaling $675,539 Completed

November 30, 2005

The Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) is pleased to announce the conclusion of a $474,313 Clean Michigan Initiative grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The project began in September 2001 and was completed in September of 2005. Under the grant, CRA and members of the Betsie River Watershed Restoration Committee worked together to stabilize 13 eroding streambanks (2,325 lineal feet), replace 3 rundown road/stream crossings, and complete a drainage tile/creek restoration site. This project helped the Betsie River Watershed Restoration Committee to restore all major streambank erosion sites on the mainstem, and initiate some of the first road/stream crossing repairs in the watershed. The improved road/stream crossings were primarily on Betsie River tributaries, including the Little Betsie and Dair Creek, in an effort to improve the high quality coldwater resources that help feed the Betsie mainstem. The project has prevented 305 tons of sediment from entering the Betsie waterways on an annual basis! Local match in the form of cash donations, volunteer efforts, labor, materials and equipment exceeded the grant requirement of $173,026 to total an impressive $201,226. This level of participation resulted in a total project cost of $675,539! Project partners included the CRA, Benzie County Road Commission, Pine River Area and Adams Chapters of Trout Unlimited, Grand Traverse Bay Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

CRA is a private, non-profit organization involved with watershed management projects throughout a 13-county region in northwest Michigan. CRA launched the River Care Initiative in 1998 to help raise funds for local watersheds to keep our rivers and creeks healthy for years to come.
