The Boardman: A River Reborn – What’s Next?

Partners are busy preparing for the next phase in one of the most comprehensive dam removal and restoration projects in Michigan’s history. Please see the announcements below and join us at an upcoming event – if you aren’t already, be a part of The Boardman: A River Reborn.

River & Trail Closures

Foot traffic should be minimized along the rediscovered river channel as the streambanks heal throughout the former Boardman Pond. Contractors will soon remobilize at the former Boardman Dam to continue restoration efforts. Once crews are onsite, the river will be closed downstream of the Lone Pine access. It is recommended river traffic take out at Beitner Road during construction. The Oleson Bridge take-out and parking lot will remain open.

FishPass Angler Workshop

Please join the Great Lakes Fishery Commission for an Angler Workshop related to the design for the FishPass project at the Union Street Dam. The workshop is on May 30 from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the Hagerty Center at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus.

The Ottaway – A River Reborn Film

Don’t miss The Ottaway – A River Reborn (2017)! This 1-hour documentary was produced by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians with director Dan Bertalan. They present a film that explores humanity’s relationship with the Boardman River. Through the hearts of minds of various stakeholders, a story unfolds about the challenges of turning back the hands of time through dam removal to once again connect the river with the waters of Grand Traverse Bay.

Say your Goodbyes to Sabin Dam

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a public bid opening for Sabin Dam removal and restoration on May 15. A contract award is expected in mid-June. Please stay tuned for construction updates!

In the meantime, consider a “Last Dam Paddle.” Bike/kayak tours are being offered by The River Outfitters with a percentage of the proceeds from this trip benefitting the Grand Traverse Conservation District’s effort to build a new landing at the former Boardman Dam.
