Bear Creek Watershed Restoration Project (Manistee County)

CRA was awarded a Clean Michigan Initiative Grant for the Manistee River Watershed, including Bear Creek, for $696,691, utilizing $263,228 in local match, over a three-year period. Under this grant approximately 6 streambanks and 3 road/stream crossings within the Bear Creek Watershed will be repaired. Additionally, the CRA was awarded $80,000 in Ten Percent Funds from the U. S. Forest Service to repair 5 road/stream crossings in the watershed.

CRA was also awarded a TEA 21 Grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation that will include money to address eroding road/stream crossings on Bear Creek and that contract is expected to be signed late this year. CRA has obtained permits from the MDEQ for work at three of the streambank sites, and is still awaiting MDEQ engineering approval before stabilization can begin. Road/stream crossing improvements were completed at Horseshoe Creek and Horseshoe Creek Road, and Bear Creek and Leffew Road. The crossing of Second Creek and Thompsonville Road is expected to be improved later this fall.

The Bear Creek Watershed Council held its first Watershed Open House in July and it was a success. Various organizations set up educational displays and a slide show was presented that discussed past, current, and future activities on Bear Creek.
