Lake Kathleen Dam Removal Kick-off
CRA and the Holton family welcomed an extraordinary group of partners at the Lake Kathleen Dam this month. The group heard from a wide variety of folks – all connected by a passion and determination to free the Maple River.

“I remember first coming out to this dam 17 years ago to talk removal – this project is a long time coming,” remarked Heather Rawlings, Fish and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Lake Kathleen Dam is slated for removal in 2018 as part of CRA’s Free Span the Maple River initiative.
DNR Funding for Pere Marquette Watershed

CRA is excited to announce the final funding needed to restore and re-connect over 14 miles of degraded habitat on Sanborn Creek, a key tributary to the Pere Marquette River. Michigan DNR approved $95,000 towards the restoration of Sanborn Creek. By reconnecting habitat that has been fragmented for over 100 years, CRA and partners are eliminating warming caused by the impounded water and reconnecting natural floodplains. The DNR Aquatic Habitat Grant Program is funded annually by a portion of fishing and hunting license sales.

All are welcome to join the celebration and RSVPs are requested to Bethany Bucklew at or by calling 231-946-6817.

Spring Update on Chestonia Bridge on the Jordan River
CRA and partners kicked off the 2017 construction season in February with Chestonia Bridge on the Jordan River. The Antrim County Road Commission’s contractor began construction on Old State Road and hopes to wrap up mid-summer. Michigan DNR and partners also hosted a public open house in East Jordan to provide information and gather input regarding recreational access at the site.
Momentum on the Pere Marquette
CRA is advancing its holistic approach to improving coldwater aquatic habitats in the Pere Marquette River Watershed with a series of four projects on Sanborn Creek. Supported by a generous $850,000 grant through the Sustain Our Great Lakes program, CRA and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are generating an immediate economic stimulus for this region through projects that will generate long-term ecological benefits.
